I read the construction site as a place where fiction is being built. Walking around Imun-dong I kept finding the tarpaulins of building sites tangled in with plants, rusted green containers and geometric objects sitting among fallen leaves and grass, and could not decide whether to see them as one thing or two.
Behind the tarpaulin a hillside neighbourhood was coming down, half dismantled, looking like a stage set left unfinished for the next act. In the emptied houses a dead lightbulb still hung, furniture stood uselessly, and stray cats and weeds had moved in. For Brecht, showing the stage was what put distance between the audience and the fiction.
